What Is Root Canal?

A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure for removing an infected or damaged pulp (the area inside the tooth that contains nerves). This problem may be caused by a deep cavity, trauma, or harmful habits, such as teeth grinding. Timely treatment can save teeth from extraction and stop the infection from spreading further. During the root canal, Dr. Sanku uses specialized instruments to thoroughly clean out the pulp. Once the nerves are removed, he fills the empty space with a special material that seals the tooth’s root and protects it from infection.

Anesthesia
Dr. Sanku provides local anesthesia to numb the area around the treated tooth. This is typically done by injecting lidocaine into the gums and surrounding tissues. The anesthesia helps to ensure that the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure.
Next, the tooth is isolated using a rubber dam or sheet, which keeps the area free of saliva and bacteria. This ensures a clean working environment and prevents materials from leaking into the patient’s mouth.
Dr. Sanku uses a drill to create an opening through the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. This may involve removing any crowns or decay to reach that area. The opening is wide enough for the dentist to access the entire root canal system.
The infected pulp tissue is then removed carefully with small files (specialized instruments). The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels that should be eliminated when they are inflamed or damaged.
The root canal system is then shaped and thoroughly cleaned. This involves using tiny tools and irrigation solutions like sodium hypochlorite. Shaping prepares the space for the filling while cleaning flushes out debris and bacteria. This disinfection is important for preventing further infection. Different tools and techniques may be used to properly shape and clean each canal.
A rubber-like filling material called gutta-percha is placed into the root canal spaces. After that, the tooth is sealed with dental cement, preventing reinfection and protecting the root canals.

ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE

Root canals are usually performed in a single visit in our dental office and are very comfortable. The entire process takes about one to two hours. Here is how it happens:

RECOVERY AFTER ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

The recovery period from root canal therapy is short. Patients usually return to their normal activities the same day after the numbness from the anesthesia wears off. It is normal to experience some mild discomfort and inflammation for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help to manage any unpleasant sensations. Within a week or two, all swelling goes down, and symptoms disappear.

A follow-up appointment is usually made six months after the dental treatment to ensure that there is no infection. With proper care and good oral hygiene, the affected tooth should heal completely and last for many years to come. If signs of infection return, patients should contact Dr. Sanku and address this issue as early as possible.
