What Is a Dental
Implant Surgery?

Dental implant surgery is a procedure for replacing missing teeth with artificial ones that appear, feel, and work just like natural ones. During this operation, Dr. Sanku surgically places titanium posts into the jawbone. These metal roots hold the replacement teeth securely in place.
Over several months, posts are fused with a patient’s jawbone (a procedure known as osseointegration). Then, our surgeon fixes a carefully created crown onto each post. This way, an implant feels completely natural and looks great.
A dental implant procedure is customizable. It can help replace a single tooth or provide support for full dentures—and everything in between. Patients often opt for dental implant surgery to improve their confidence and oral health by addressing the discomfort and inconvenience of missing teeth. These can seriously impact both how well they chew and speak (not to mention smile).

Types of Dental Implants

At One Family Dental, we have a selection of dental implants to suit individual needs. The choice depends on how many teeth a patient is missing and the health of their jawbone. Here are some common types of dental implants:

Dental Implant Surgery Explained

Initial Consultation and Evaluation
At the initial consultation, Dr. Sanku conducts a thorough assessment to determine which type of dental implant is best for the patient. This involves examining the patient’s oral health and reviewing their dental and medical records. Our dentist also takes X-rays or CT scans (three-dimensional pictures) of the patient’s teeth and jawbone to check their condition. Dr. Sanku also discusses with the patient what they hope to achieve. He explains how the procedure works in detail and indicates the price for the entire treatment plan.
Next, a patient undergoes a complete examination to identify any medical issues that may affect the surgery. Additional tests, such as blood work, might be ordered to confirm good health. Dental implant surgery may not be recommended for specific medical conditions:

Implant Placement

On the day of surgery, Dr. Sanku administers local anesthesia to ensure patients’ comfort during the procedure. Sedation options might also be available to provide a stress-free experience. The surgery itself takes about one to two hours per implant.

  • Incision and Preparation: Dr. Sanku creates a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the underlying jawbone. Next, he drills an exact hole into the bone itself. This is where the implant will eventually go.

  • Implant Insertion: The titanium implant post is delicately inserted into the socket drilled into your jawbone. After it’s in position, the gum tissue is placed over the implant (which may be covered with a temporary healing cap). Then, our surgeon uses sutures to aid healing.

Once the implant is inserted, it takes between three and six months for the jawbone to fuse with it. This process is called osseointegration. During this period, Dr. Sanku may fit a temporary crown. This way, the patient can still use the tooth and feel confident about its appearance.
Once the implant has fully fused with the jawbone, our surgeon carries out a small operation to affix an abutment to it. This procedure typically lasts between half an hour and one hour. The abutment acts as a link between the implant and the eventual crown.
Once the gum tissue has fully healed, Dr. Sanku makes impressions of a patient’s teeth. This way, he can create a custom crown. This crown will be color-matched to a patient’s existing teeth and made to fit perfectly. When the crown is ready, it can be securely attached to the abutment. At this point, a dental implant treatment is complete.

Recovery After a Dental Implant Surgery

After dental implant surgery, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and minor bleeding. Dr. Sanku provides specific instructions for managing these symptoms. These may include using ice packs and taking recommended medications to reduce pain and inflammation. We recommend that our patients do not disturb the implant site. Besides, we advise them to eat soft foods for the first few days to minimize pressure.

First Few Days

For the first 48 hours after surgery, our dentist emphasizes the importance of oral hygiene. However, patients should not brush the area where they had the operation. Instead, using warm saltwater to rinse their mouth can help keep the area clean and aid healing. It is also advised to refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol, as they may hinder the healing process.
Most patients can resume their normal activities within a week. However, they should still avoid tough or sticky foods. If there are any stitches left in place, Dr. Sanku usually removes them at this point. He also checks to make sure everything is healing as expected. Patients should continue to follow our dentist’s instructions for oral hygiene, including gentle brushing and regular rinsing.
Within the coming months, the jawbone and dental implant “join” together. This process is known as osseointegration. Throughout this time, it is essential to continue with regular dental check-ups. This way, we can track how well the implant is integrating and deal with any issues as soon as possible. Again, to ensure that everything heals properly, patients must take good care of their mouths and eat healthy foods.
Once osseointegration is complete (which usually takes between three and six months), the dental implant can have a crown fitted. This final stage returns complete teeth functionality and aesthetics. At this point, Dr. Sanku provides advice on how best to look after the patient’s new implant(s). This includes the need for regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene procedures. This way, patients may keep their teeth healthy and make sure their implants last as long as possible.

Candidates for a Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implant surgery is perfect for people who want to replace missing teeth and restore the function and appearance of their smile. Suitable candidates should meet the following criteria:
  • Good General and Oral Health: Patients ought to be in acceptable physical condition, without any ongoing diseases. Any health conditions may impact their recovery. Furthermore, they must take good care of their overall oral health for successful implant integration.
  • Fully Grown Jawbone: For patients considering implants, it is vital that they have a fully developed jawbone. This way, there is a stable base for the implant to be placed and attached securely.
  • Adequate Bone Density: The patient’s jawbone needs to have enough bone content to support the implant. If there isn’t enough, they may need to have a bone graft surgery. This way, we can add more bone material and create a strong foundation for the implant.
  • Healthy Gum Tissue: If a patient has a periodontal disease, it can affect the area where the implant will go. So, to ensure the success of the process, it is crucial to have healthy gums.
  • Non-smokers: Nicotine can hinder the healing process and make implant failure more likely. Those who consider undergoing dental implant surgery should not smoke or stop for a period before and after their operation.
